High Quality, Low Sugar Ingredients for Toby’s Plate
When you think about baked goods, you typically think of something sweet and decadent – a sugary, buttery treat. You might have that cookie, cake, scone, or whatever it may be and really enjoy it! And this is absolutely okay! We know that being overly restrictive can backfire. However, we also know how important it is to not overdo it with sugar, refined oils, and processed ingredients.
Let’s just focus on sugar for a moment. White and brown sugars, which are most commonly found in your typical baked goods, are refined (or processed) sugars. These sugars, along with the white flours and refined oils (like vegetable oil) in many baked goods negatively impact our energy levels, mood, and sleep. A high sugar and/or highly-processed diet can also lead to many negative health outcomes, like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
Sugar causes our glucose levels to spike and then drop. This instability in our blood sugar levels can lead to hunger, cravings, fatigue, headaches, and poor mood. Longer term, this can lead to insulin resistance, which can be a precursor for diabetes. Instead, we want to reach for whole foods at meals/snacks that include protein, fiber, and healthy fats! This keeps our blood sugar levels stable and allows us to feel more energized, happier, and can keep cravings at bay.
So what to do?! You can always provide a healthier alternative, like Toby’s Plate Bakery muffins, breads, and energy balls! In my baking, I ONLY use wholesome, simple, and high quality ingredients. Baked goods are made with almond, coconut, and oat flours rather than refined flours like your typical white or pastry flours. I use organic, virgin coconut oil, in place of processed and refined oils like vegetable oil. Finally, baked goods are naturally sweetened with applesauce and bananas, and some are lightly sweetened with maple syrup. I use only pure, organic maple syrup, which undergoes less processing and has a lower glycemic index than white/brown sugars (therefore not spiking blood sugar levels as much). It even contains some nutritional benefits, like certain antioxidants, zinc, and potassium.
Whether it’s a muffin, slice of bread, energy ball, or quinola - these baked goods are packed with fiber, protein, and healthy fats. Some are lightly sweetened with maple syrup, dates, applesauce, and bananas, but due to the fiber content, this should not lead to blood sugar imbalances, which are typical with most baked goods.
So there you have it! A little more behind the scenes information for WHY I choose the ingredients I do. You can trust that Toby’s Plate ingredients have been thoughtfully sourced. Now all you have to do is enjoy them with your families!
